Is Chiropractic Care Safe During Pregnancy?

By Dr. Megan Touron

All throughout pregnancy, there are several changes that occur in preparation for creating the best environment for the developing baby. If it is your first pregnancy or maybe even your 3rd or 4th, you may have a lot of questions about what sorts of things are safe for you and your developing baby.

Is this food safe to eat? What exercises are good to perform during pregnancy? Is chiropractic care during pregnancy safe?

PREGNANCY & CHIROPRACTIC CARE IN COLLEGEDALE TN

As a chiropractor in Collegedale, this is a question I get asked quite a bit. I always tell my pregnant patients that during your pregnancy, the body is going through dramatic physical and hormonal changes that will impact both your posture and comfort. As the baby grows, it can increase the curvature of the low back due to the protrusion of the abdomen causing misalignments in the pelvis.

When your pelvis is misaligned, it restricts the full amount of space for your developing baby to move causing discomfort in the back, hip or other joints. Pregnant women may also experience symptoms such as headaches, neck and sciatic pain as a result of these changes in their body.

Chiropractic care is a safe, non-invasive and a highly beneficial practice during pregnancy.  It is a safe alternative to deal with many of the symptoms of pregnancy such as nausea, heartburn and swelling of the hands and feet. It has also been shown to help shorten labor times and make the entire birthing process easier.

Whether it be your first, second or third trimester it is very important to let your chiropractor know that you are pregnant. Modifications in adjusting techniques and care can be made to meet your specific needs during this time.

The choice to pursue chiropractic care before, during and after pregnancy is one of the most beneficial decisions you can make for your body and baby!
