6 Amazing Ways to Keep Your Kids Healthy!

By Dr. Megan Touron

Are your kids struggling with colds and sniffles?

All throughout the year, we run into times where it just seems like everyone’s kids around us are getting sick. Let’s face it, everybody gets sick. But we all have the common goal of keeping our children as healthy as possible both at school and at home. That being said, the BEST way to prevent your child from getting sick to boost their immune system. The healthier the immune system, the less chance kids have to get sick.

So HOW do you go about boosting the immune system? Most of us will agree that the sooner you begin these with your child, the stronger their immune system will be.

1. Be Active Daily.

Involving your children in daily activity is a huge benefit for their immune system. Get outside (weather permitting) for one hour every day to breathe in the fresh air and go for a walk. Let them play in the dirt!

Kids will be kids and letting them get dirty is a great way to boost their immune system. It exposes our children to the everyday microbes out in the world and if their bodies learn at an early age to fight them off then there is less chance they will be affected later in life.

2. Sleep.

Adequate sleep for children has been shown to dramatically improve their health and healing. Sleep disruptions have shown to impede memory, negatively affect reflexes, elicit a more negative mindset and inhibit decision making skills. Long-term memory, emotional stability, cognitive skills and ability to learn has also been thought to be affected.

Start by setting a consistent bedtime routine. This allows the child to settle down at the end of the day and relax before laying down to bed!

3. Balanced/Healthy Diet.

FRUITS AND VEGGIES!!! Need I say more? Every meal and snack that your child eats should have certain healthy components in it. Foods high in Vitamin C ( Oranges, Strawberries, Broccoli,Pineapple, Tomatoes) and Vitamin D (Tuna, Salmon, Shrimp, Egg yolks, Mushrooms).

Probiotics are another great way to support gut-health in your children. Yogurt is one of the best sources of probiotics you can consume. Sauerkraut, pickles, miso, kombucha and fermented soybeans are also a great way to add probiotics into your daily lifestyle.

4. Don’t Put a BAN on Junk Food.

Don’t get me wrong, a diet that solely consists of junk food will most definitely cause harmful side effects on your child. However, placing a BAN on junk food; or better yet, ANYTHING; will only lead to kids craving it. This has been shown to lead to unhealthy eating habits later in life. Make sure junk food is consumed in moderation.

5. Keeping Hands Clean…But Don’t Over-Do It. Kids….they want to touch everything!

While we want our little ones to explore and learn things on their own, keeping proper hygiene while they do it is very important. Bacteria is crawling on every surface we touch and while adults know to wash hands after touching something dirty, children will just wipe their hands on their pants and move on.

It is our job to wipe them down and wash their hands as needed. Some will ask, “should I carry 100% antibacterial hand sanitizer gel, wipes, pads with me everywhere I go?”. My answer to this would be no. Just basic soap and water is the most efficient way to clean the body. Sometimes if we are continuously using the products that eliminate 100% of bacteria, it will get rid of the healthy bacteria on the body as well.

6. Chiropractic Care.

An adjustment from a Chiropractor can boost the immune system over 200%. How cool is that?! When there is a shift in the spine, or a subluxation, it inhibits the nervous system function and depletes the immune system. With an adjustment, the nervous system is able to function at its optimal level allowing the body to heal itself like it is designed to do.
