Are you starting your week off sore?
We get it!
Whether from doing yard work, painting, cleaning, or just chasing the kids around, it isn’t uncommon to end your much anticipated weekend feeling more exhausted than when you started it.
ESPECIALLY in the spring and summer, we tend to take on odd jobs over the weekend that we don’t have time to get to during the week, and we end up overexerting ourselves in ways that our body isn’t used to.
And while there’s nothing wrong with working hard to get things done, it is important to make sure you’re doing your chores in a safe way and to listen to your body afterwards to prevent future damage.
So, what can I be doing to avoid all this pain?
Tip #1. SUPPORT
Often when doing chores around the house we don’t think about wearing supportive shoes. Sometimes, we don’t think about wearing shoes at all!
But, having proper arch support is crucial in taking stress off our knees, hips and lower back.
So, if you don’t already have shoes with good arch and heel support, consider getting orthotic inserts to give your body the extra support it needs!
Tip #2. POSTURE
It’s so easy for posture to become an afterthought, but when it comes to avoiding back and neck pain, posture is everything!
When sweeping, raking or painting, always try to keep your chest and shoulders up rather than hunched forward.
And when lifting, NEVER lean to the side or twist to pick an object up.
Keep your knees shoulder-width apart and bend at the knees, holding the object close to your body when you lift and set it down.
Tip #3. HYDRATION
Drinking water is important for countless reasons, but you may have forgotten that it plays a huge role in keeping away muscle cramps and spasms!
By drinking water, you help to continually flush toxins out of your body, keeping your muscles in working order.
Just remember to KEEP drinking water, even after the job is done!
Tip #4. STRETCH
While it’s always a good idea to stretch, it is especially important to do so AFTER exercise.
Stretching after strenuous yard/house work improves blood circulation (allowing your body to cool down and heart return to its resting rate), helps maintain your energy levels, improves your range of motion, and helps prevent future pain.
If you skip stretching, your muscles will remain tight and increase your risk of muscle injury and pain.
Tip #5. GET ADJUSTED
Don’t stay in pain!
While a little soreness isn’t anything to worry about, pain that continues (even subtly) or comes back several days later isn’t anything to ignore.
We often write off aches and pains as “normal.”
But they don’t have to be!
