Q & A with the Doc: Why Do I Need an Exam Before My Adjustments?

By Dr. Ryan Lee

One question I get often from my patients is, “why do I need an exam before you adjust me?” To answer it plainly, it is so I can get a baseline for the health and integrity of your spine and nervous system.

If you went to a fitness trainer and had a goal of losing weight, they would need to know how much you weighed as well as your activity level and physical fitness level before they could appropriately prescribe you a proper workout plan. I could not provide the care necessary without first knowing what condition your spine is in. This is done through a postural assessment, spinal exam, neurological evaluation, and digital x-rays.

HOW CHIROPRACTIC CARE IN COLLEGEDALE CAN HELP

A postural assessment shows the alignment of your body relative to your spine. It will also show if your body is compensating for any muscular weaknesses or structural deficiencies within the spine.

A full spinal examination and neurological evaluation shows where structural shifts and joint fixations may have occurred. Another reason I assess your entire spine and nervous system is to find miscommunications between your brain and body which impair function.

Lastly, if necessary, using our state-of-the-art, digital x-ray system, we are able to find any curves, degeneration or loss of disc space in your spine, which can’t be detected during the other evaluations. The entire exam generally takes around 40 minutes to perform and is the basis to providing our patients with exceptional individualized care to Get them Back to What They Love!
